blog about stress,
by Rose-Marie Rosdahl
My name is Rose-Marie ”Rosan” Rosdahl, work in RoSans & Balans in Kristianstad, Sweden and I’ve been asked by Susanne to write about stress. One reason to this is, besides being a Certificated Holistic Healing Therapist, and teacher for basic levels of Holistic Healing, I’m also Certificated Stress Therapist.
The topic; Stress is close to my heart, I have my own experiences of how stress can affect me and I learned how to keep balance in my life. I had to learn to listen within, sometimes the results of that, made me aware of that I needed to make changes in my life, not always so easy but very necessary for my heart and soul.
Here I want to share some of the basic knowledge and also basic tools and exercises, to help you take a step in a positive direction. I hope my knowledge can be helpful for you.
So let’s start from the beginning.
Stress is an important part of life
Why do we have the stress symptoms? What is the purpose?
Well, it’s inherited from the beginning of time. Then we needed to fight for our survival. It’s an essential function for mankind when in danger, be able to run, fight or play dead. When out of danger, we took a break to regain our power again.
So the original function is; that we from a normal state of mind/body, when facing danger, high dose of adrenaline flushing through the veins to increase the oxygen to the muscles and make us more alert. Make us ready to fight or flee from the danger as quick as ever possible. When safe, we stopped to regained our power.
So, once again, from a normal state of mind, we face danger, body reacts, we come home to our safe place, cool down and reset to normal state of mind and body.
Simply as my picture below:
A pretty smart system, right?
This is in other words, how you are supposed to get Balanced.
Reactions of Stress
Problems today, are that we are overloaded with information and demands. We are always available, online, connected, exposed to, mostly, imagined danger. Stress hormones in our bodies’ increases all the time, when exposed to “stressors”, things that gives you stress symptoms.
Our body reacts with:
- Hypophysis, activity increases
- Noradrenaline and adrenaline increasing
- Breathing increases
- Sweat increases
- Heart beating and blood pressure increases
- Adrenal Gland increases production of cortisol
- Digestion is affected
- Tensions in your muscles increases
These are essential functions in our bodies, and are meant to be temporary.
This is why we need recreation. We need to get balanced.
Remember, we, people, are human beings. We are supposed to allow ourselves to relax, to be. Of course, we need to be active as well but we are not “Human Doings”
How can you get balance in your life?
Throughout life, we have different phases and different experiences. Therefore we need to look at different solutions for one another to our stressors as well.
Still, in general there are some simple tools that you can use, no matter who/what your stressors are
To be able to change anything, we need to be aware of what we do and why we do it. We need to understand that we have a possibility to reconsider. If we for example aren’t able to change a situation, we can work with changing our attitude against it. Important to keep in mind, that the only person we can change is ourselves, others we can affect but never change.
Sometimes we are not even aware of what issues that make us stressed out. Please take a moment to make your “stressors” conscious by a simple exercise:
Begin with taking a piece of paper and a pen out;
Think about what is making you stressed out in your life: Put these down on the paper; things/events/people/situations.
Sort it out:
- Things you can change? Prioritize the ones you should act upon, an act upon one thing at a time! Can you find a structure, working out for you?
- Are there things you cannot change? Learn to accept that it is so. The only thing you can change here is your point of view about the situation.
Keep in mind that even the longest trip starts with a first step. So, take one step at a time and enjoy.
Below you find a prayer worth considering; Prayer of Serenity, a good tool to use.
GRANT ME THE SERENITY
TO ACCEPT THE THINGS I CANNOT CHANGE
COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS I CAN
AND WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE"
